Signs you need this repair

Sound familiar? The diagnosis is always free.

  • The phone needs charging more than once a day
  • It shuts off at 20% or 30%, or jumps from 40% to zero
  • It only works while plugged in
  • The back glass or screen is lifting away from the frame
  • The phone gets hot during light use or while charging
  • It restarts on its own when you open the camera or a game

Why Android batteries wear out

Phone batteries are lithium-ion, and every one loses capacity a little with each charge cycle. Heat speeds that up. So does spending a lot of time at 100%, fast charging in a hot car, or gaming while plugged in. Most people start to notice the drop after two to three years, sooner with heavy use. Cold weather makes any battery look worse for a while, but a healthy one recovers once it warms up.

A worn battery doesn’t just run out faster. As it ages it can’t deliver power as steadily, so the phone may shut off under load, like when the camera flash fires or a game starts, even when the percentage looks fine.

To slow wear on your next battery, use the built-in protection: Samsung’s Protect battery setting caps charging below 100%, and Pixels have adaptive charging and, on newer models, an option to limit charging to 80%.

Check your battery health first

Before you book, it’s worth ruling out a software cause.

  • Samsung: open the Samsung Members app, go to Support and run the battery test under phone diagnostics. It reports the battery’s status.
  • Pixel: newer Pixels show a battery health reading under Settings › Battery.
  • Look at Settings › Battery usage for one app using far more than its share. Updating or removing that app can fix the drain.
  • After a major Android update, give the phone two or three days. It re-indexes in the background and drains faster for a while.

If the battery tests as weak, or the drain is the same in safe mode, a new battery is the fix.

Swollen battery: stop charging it

A swollen battery pushes the back glass or screen outward. You may see a gap at the edge, a screen that looks raised, or a phone that rocks on a table. Stop charging it, don’t press on the bulge, and keep it somewhere cool, away from anything flammable.

Shipping carriers restrict damaged lithium batteries, so contact us before mailing a swollen phone. A nearby partner store is often the safer, faster choice. The swelling has usually already stretched the adhesive, and sometimes cracked the screen or back glass, which we check during the free diagnosis.

How a Galaxy or Pixel battery replacement works

Phones are opened differently depending on the brand. Most Galaxy phones are opened from the back: we heat the back glass to soften the adhesive, lift it off, and remove the inner covers to reach the battery. Most recent Pixels are opened from the front, so the screen has to come off first. If your screen is already cracked, opening it this way is riskier, and we tell you before we start.

Android batteries are held in with strong adhesive. We release it with heat, solvent and plastic tools, never by levering on the cell with metal, because a punctured lithium battery can catch fire. Then the new battery goes in with fresh adhesive, the phone is resealed, and we check charging, wired and wireless, plus the percentage readout.

Let the new battery run through a few normal charge cycles. The percentage reading settles as the phone learns the new cell.

What affects the price

Battery replacements start from $79. Phones that open from the front, newer releases, Ultra and Fold models, and phones with a cracked back that needs replacing at the same time cost more. We use quality batteries rated at the original capacity. Be wary of replacement batteries that claim far more capacity than the phone shipped with; the space inside the phone doesn’t change.

If your screen or back glass also needs work, mention it when you book, since both can be done while the phone is open. See your price on the booking page.

Before you book

  • Back up your phone while it still holds a charge.
  • If you’re mailing it, leave it at a partial charge rather than full, and turn it off.
  • Remove the case, SIM card and any memory card.
  • Leave your Google account signed in. We may ask for your screen passcode only to test the repair.

Questions

Is a battery worth replacing on an older phone?

Usually, if the phone still gets security updates. Samsung and Google now promise up to seven years of updates on recent flagships, so a battery can add years of use. If your phone is past its update window, weigh that before you spend.

Will a new battery make my phone faster?

It can help. A worn battery can cause lag, sudden shutdowns and restarts under load. A new one fixes those. It won’t speed up a phone that’s simply short on storage or memory.

Can I keep using my phone with a swollen battery?

No. Stop charging it and get it replaced. A swelling battery is under internal stress and can rupture, and it’s already pushing on your screen or back glass.

How long does an Android battery replacement take?

Partner stores can often do it the same day, depending on the model and part availability. Mail-in is typically 7–10 days door to door, including shipping both ways and the free diagnosis.

Does the battery replacement affect my data?

No. Your photos, apps and settings are stored separately from the battery and stay where they are.
