Every iPod Classic, old and new.
Can you still fix an iPod Classic?
Yes. Batteries, screens, click wheels, headphone jacks and cases are all still available, and iPod Classic restoration is one of our favorite jobs.
What is a flash storage upgrade?
We replace the original spinning hard drive, the part most likely to fail, with solid-state SD or SSD storage. It's silent, much more durable, usually lighter, holds far more music and often extends battery life.
Which mods can I combine?
Most of them. A popular build is flash storage plus a high-capacity battery, which fits because flash storage frees up space inside. Bluetooth and USB-C depend on the model and the case, so we'll confirm what fits yours before we start.
Can you get music off a dead iPod?
Often, yes. If the drive still spins up or the data is readable, we can copy your music and playlists to a drive or your computer.
Which iPod Classic do you have?
Turn your iPod over. The model number is printed in small type on the back. A1136 is the iPod Video: the 5th gen (2005, 30GB and 60GB) and the 5.5th gen (2006, 30GB and 80GB, with a brighter screen and search). A1238 covers every iPod Classic: the 6th gen (2007, 80GB thin or 160GB thick), the 6.5th gen (2008, 120GB) and the 7th gen (2009, 160GB thin), the last one Apple made. Capacity and case thickness tell those apart. If you aren’t sure, choose the closest model when you book and we confirm it at the diagnosis.
The generation matters because screens, click wheels, batteries and back plates differ between the 5th gen family and the 6th and 7th gen family, and because it decides which upgrades fit.
What goes wrong with an iPod Classic
These iPods are fifteen to twenty years old, and nearly all faults come from a few parts that age.
- The hard drive. The small spinning drive is the most common failure. Signs are a sad iPod icon, a folder with an exclamation point, clicking, skipping and Apple logo loops. If yours has music you can’t replace, see iPod music recovery before you restore anything.
- The battery. Every original battery is long past its design life. Short run time and sudden shut-offs are typical. See iPod Classic battery replacement.
- The click wheel. Skipping, phantom scrolling and a dead center button usually come from a worn or torn ribbon. See click wheel repair.
- The headphone jack and hold switch. Sound in one ear, crackling or a hold switch that won’t unlock point to the ribbon that carries both.
- The screen. Cracked LCDs, failed backlights and scratched windows. See screen replacement.
Many iPods we see were damaged by an earlier opening. The steel back bends easily and the internal ribbons tear, so the way the case is opened matters as much as the part.
Repair, restore or restomod?
An iPod Classic is worth fixing. There is nothing like it on sale, and parts are still available. The question is how far to go.
- Repair fixes the fault and keeps the iPod original, including the hard drive.
- Upgrade replaces the part most likely to fail next. A flash storage upgrade makes the iPod silent and tougher, with far more space and longer battery life, and opens the way for a high-capacity battery.
- Modernize with a Bluetooth module for wireless headphones and a USB-C port for modern cables.
- Restomod does it all in one opening: flash, big battery, new case and wheel, and a deep clean. We quote these individually. Our mods guide and flash upgrade guide help you plan.
Rockbox is free, open-source firmware that runs on the 5th and 5.5th gen iPod Video and, in current releases, on the 6th to 7th gen Classic. It adds FLAC and many other formats, gapless playback, an equalizer and themes. It can be set up to dual boot, so you can still start Apple’s software. Rockbox needs the iPod formatted for Windows (FAT32), which we handle during setup.
Store or mail-in?
iPod Classic work is specialist. Opening the case without marks, handling the ribbons and fitting flash adapters take practice and parts that most general repair stores don’t carry. Our lab is set up with the tools and parts for it, so mail-in is the usual choice for iPods. If a partner store near you lists iPod repair, it can handle simpler jobs, and you can compare on repair near me. Mail-in uses a free, prepaid, insured label both ways, and typically takes 7–10 days door to door. How mail-in works.
How pricing works
Each repair shows a starting price. The final price depends on your generation, what the diagnosis finds and the options you choose, such as storage capacity or battery size. Diagnosis is free, the price is confirmed before any work, and if we can’t fix it you don’t pay. Combining jobs in one opening saves labor, so tell us everything you want when you book. See pricing or get your price.
Your music and getting ready
A battery, screen or click wheel repair doesn’t touch your storage. A flash upgrade replaces the drive, so we can copy your library over or you can sync it again afterwards. We only handle your files when the job needs it, and we don’t keep copies.
- If your iPod works, make sure your music is also on a computer.
- Don’t restore an iPod that clicks or shows a sad face if it holds music you need.
- Remove cases, skins and anything plugged into it. Keep your cables.
- Tell us about engravings, previous repairs and anything you want kept, such as your original back plate.
We never need your Apple ID or any password to work on an iPod.
