Does your iPod Classic need a new battery?

Signs of a worn battery, what replacing it involves, and a smart pairing.

Quick answer

If your iPod Classic dies quickly, won't charge, shuts off while showing charge, or only works while plugged in, the battery is likely worn out. A new battery brings back full-day listening. Our iPod Classic battery replacements start at $99.

Signs the battery is worn

  • It lasts a fraction of the time it used to.
  • It shows a charge but shuts off suddenly.
  • It only works while plugged in.
  • It won't charge at all, or takes forever to charge.
  • The case is bulging slightly.

Some of these can also be caused by a failing hard drive or a worn dock connector, which is why we check first. The diagnosis is free.

What a replacement involves

  1. The case is carefully opened with proper tools. iPod Classic cases are clipped tightly and easy to bend if forced.
  2. The old battery is disconnected and removed.
  3. A new battery is fitted and the case is closed.
  4. The iPod is charged and tested.

Higher-capacity batteries

Larger-capacity batteries are available for some iPod models. Very large batteries may need a thicker back case to fit. We'll tell you the options for your model before any work starts.

Pair it with a flash upgrade

Because the case only needs opening once, it's efficient to replace the battery and the old hard drive at the same time. The flash upgrade also uses less power, so you get more listening time from the new battery. See the iPod Classic flash upgrade.

Battery or hard drive?

On hard-drive iPods, a dying drive can look a lot like a dying battery. A drive that struggles to spin up uses extra power, which drains the battery quickly and can make the iPod freeze or shut off.

  • Clicking, ticking or the sad iPod icon usually points to the hard drive.
  • Fast drain with no other symptoms usually points to the battery.
  • Freezing mid-song or very slow menus can be either, and on older iPods it's often both.

If the drive is failing too, a flash storage upgrade at the same time fixes both in one opening. We'll check both during the free diagnosis.

Look after the new battery

  • Charge it regularly; don't leave it completely flat for months.
  • Keep it out of heat, like a car in summer.
  • If you won't use it for a while, store it partly charged.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an iPod Classic battery replacement?

Ours start at $99. Opening an iPod Classic without bending the case takes time and care, and we fit quality cells. You'll see the exact price before any work starts.

Will I lose my music?

A battery replacement doesn't touch your music, though a backup on your computer is always a good idea.

Can you open my iPod without scratching it?

We use proper tools and take care, but iPod Classic cases are very tight and older ones can already be worn. If you'd like a fresh look, we can fit a new case at the same time.
