Signs you need this repair

Sound familiar? The diagnosis is always free.

  • The TV shows “No signal” while the console’s light is on
  • The picture cuts out or flickers when the cable is touched
  • The HDMI cable feels loose or won’t seat all the way in
  • Pins inside the port look bent, pushed back or missing
  • Sound comes through but there’s no picture
  • The picture only works at a lower resolution or without HDR

Why console HDMI ports break

The HDMI port is soldered straight to the motherboard. Apart from a few solder joints and a thin metal shell, nothing else holds it in place. When a cable gets yanked, the console is moved while it’s plugged in, or a heavy cable hangs off the back, that force goes into the joints. Over time the joints crack, the pins inside bend, or the shell tears away from the board.

Other causes we see often:

  • A cable pushed in upside down or at an angle, which shoves the center pins back
  • Stiff, heavy cables and adapters that pry on the port every time the console moves
  • A drop, or a knock to the back of the console
  • Power surges or faulty AV gear that damage the HDMI chip rather than the port

From the couch, a damaged port and a damaged chip look exactly the same: a black screen. That’s why we test both before we quote.

Port or HDMI chip? What we check first

Between the HDMI port and the console’s main processor sits a small HDMI chip. On the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One S and X it’s an HDMI retimer, which cleans up and strengthens the video signal on its way out. On the PS4 family it’s an HDMI encoder that turns the console’s video output into an HDMI signal. If that chip is damaged, a new port on its own won’t bring the picture back.

During the free diagnosis we inspect the port under magnification, measure the data lines, and check the HDMI chip and the parts around it for shorts or heat damage. Then we tell you which repair you need:

  • Port only. The most common result. We remove the old port, clean and prepare the pads and solder in a new one.
  • Port and HDMI chip. If the retimer or encoder has failed, we replace it too. This costs more, and you approve the price first.
  • Board repair. Torn pads or broken traces under the port have to be rebuilt before a new port can go on. We’ll show you what we found.

How much does a console HDMI port repair cost?

HDMI port repair starts from $99. That covers a port replacement on most PlayStation and Xbox models. What can raise the price:

  • Your model, since some boards take longer to reach than others
  • A failed HDMI retimer or encoder chip that also needs replacing
  • Pad or trace damage, often from an earlier repair attempt
  • Extra faults we find along the way, such as a failing fan or liquid residue

You’ll get the exact price before any work starts. If you decline, we send the console back and you don’t pay for a repair. Our pricing page explains how quotes work.

PS5, PS4 and Xbox model notes

  • PS5 and PS5 Slim. Reaching the port means a full teardown, heatsink included. PS5 consoles use liquid metal between the processor and the heatsink, so we keep the board level and leave that area undisturbed while we work.
  • PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro. Port damage is very common on these. Some no-signal PS4s turn out to have a failed HDMI encoder chip rather than a broken port.
  • Xbox Series X and Series S. Ports fail less often, but they still get damaged by pulled cables. We check the retimer on every no-signal Xbox we see.
  • Xbox One, One S and One X. Older consoles often have port wear and a lot of dust inside, so we also look at cooling. If it needs a clean, see console overheating repair.

If your model isn’t listed, book anyway and pick it on the booking form. We’ll confirm what’s possible during the free check.

What to try before you book

A few safe checks can rule out the cable or the TV:

  1. Try a different HDMI cable, ideally the one that came with the console.
  2. Use a different HDMI input on the TV, or a different TV or monitor.
  3. Unplug receivers, soundbars and HDMI switches and connect the console straight to the TV.
  4. Reset the video output. A PS5 can start in Safe Mode, where you can change the video output. Xbox consoles have a low-resolution startup mode; Microsoft’s support pages list the button combination for your model.

If none of that brings the picture back, or you can see bent pins, stop plugging cables in. Forcing a cable into a damaged port can bridge pins together and harm the chip behind it.

When you book, send the console only. Keep the cable, controllers and stand at home, and take out any disc. You don’t need to sign out of your PlayStation or Xbox account.

Questions

Can I fix a loose HDMI port by holding the cable at an angle?

It might give you a picture for a while, but it usually means the solder joints have cracked. Every time the cable moves, the joints get worse and the risk of damaging the pins or the chip goes up.

Someone already tried to fix my HDMI port. Can you still help?

Often, yes. Earlier attempts can leave lifted pads, bridged pins or heat damage. We check this during the free diagnosis and tell you whether board repair is needed and what it costs before any work.

What kind of HDMI port do you fit?

A quality replacement port made for your model’s footprint, so it fits the board and the case like the original. We test video and audio output on a real display before the console ships back.

How do I keep the new port from breaking again?

Leave some slack in the cable, unplug it before you move the console, and avoid heavy cables or adapters hanging off the port. If the console sits on a shelf, make sure the cable isn’t pulled tight when the console slides.

Do you need my PlayStation Network or Xbox account password?

No. We test the repair without signing in to your account, so leave the console as it is and keep your passwords to yourself.
