PS5, PS4 and Xbox disc drive repair.
When a console won’t read, accept or eject discs, the laser or the loading mechanism is usually at fault. We repair the drive you have and test it with real games before it goes back.

Signs you need this repair
Sound familiar? The diagnosis is always free.
- An “unrecognized disc” or “can’t read disc” message
- The console won’t pull a disc in, or pushes it back out
- A disc is stuck inside and won’t eject
- Grinding, clicking or very loud spinning from the drive
- The disc ejects by itself
- Some discs play while others don’t
- New scratches or rings appear on discs after playing
Why console disc drives stop working
A disc drive has a lot of moving parts: a laser that slides on rails, a motor that spins the disc, and a loading system that pulls it in and pushes it out. Any of these can wear or fail:
- Laser wear or dust. The lens collects dust and the laser weakens with age, so the drive starts struggling with discs it used to read.
- Loading and eject parts. Small gears, belts and motors wear, crack or slip.
- Rails and spindle. Dried grease or a worn spindle motor can make the disc wobble or scrape.
- Cables and connectors. A loose or damaged drive cable can stop the drive altogether.
If your drive is grinding or scratching discs, stop using it. Each attempt can damage your games.
Laser, mechanism or drive board?
The free diagnosis tells us which part has failed. Here’s why that matters: on the PS5 and on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles, the disc drive’s control board is paired to the motherboard. A complete drive taken from another console won’t work in yours. So we keep your original control board and replace the laser, the mechanism or the parts around it.
That pairing is also why some quick fixes you see online go wrong. A swapped drive powers on, but the console refuses to use it. Repairing the drive you have avoids that problem.
Here’s how the repair itself goes. We open the console, remove the drive and clean the lens, rails and loading parts. Then we test the laser’s ability to read. If it still struggles, we fit a replacement laser or mechanism, keeping your control board, and run a mix of Blu-ray, DVD and game discs through it. A stuck disc, worn gears or a weak eject motor gets sorted in the same visit.
Disc stuck in your console?
Don’t pry it out with a knife, card or screwdriver. That can scratch the disc beyond repair and damage the loading mechanism.
PlayStation and Xbox both publish official manual-eject instructions for many of their models. If yours has one, follow the steps exactly, with the console unplugged. If it doesn’t work, or the disc only comes partway out, book the repair and leave the disc inside. We’ll get it out safely and send it back with the console.
How much does a console disc drive repair cost?
Disc drive repair starts from $89. Your final price depends on:
- Whether the laser, the loading mechanism or both need replacing
- Your model and how far apart the console has to come
- Broken gears or bent parts from a stuck disc
- Detachable drives, which are priced on their own
We confirm the price before any work. Damage to discs that happened before the repair isn’t something we can undo.
Model notes
- PS5 (original disc edition). Laser and eject faults are the common ones. The drive board is paired, so we repair rather than swap.
- PS5 Slim, PS5 Digital with disc drive, PS5 Pro. These use a detachable drive that pairs with the console online the first time it’s attached. Send the drive together with the console.
- PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro. On the earliest PS4 models, ejecting on its own is often the touch-sensitive eject button, not the drive.
- Xbox One, One S, One X and Series X. Laser and loading faults are common. The paired drive board stays with your console.
- Xbox Series S and digital-only consoles. These have no disc drive, so there’s nothing to repair here.
Before you send it
Take out any disc you can. Write down which games fail and which still play, and include that note in the box or the booking form. It helps us find the fault faster. Send the console only, plus the drive if it’s a detachable one. You don’t need to sign out of your account or delete anything.

Questions
Why does my console read some discs and not others?
Drives use different laser wavelengths for Blu-ray, DVD and CD, and one can weaken before the others. A dirty lens or a slightly worn laser also struggles first with discs that have scratches or fingerprints.
Will cleaning the laser fix it?
Sometimes. We always clean and inspect it first. If the laser itself has weakened, cleaning won’t last and it needs replacing.
Can you replace my drive with one from another console?
Not on paired models such as the PS5 and Xbox One or Series X. The console only accepts its own control board, so we repair around it.
Will my digital games and saves be affected?
No. The disc drive is separate from storage, so your installed games, saves and account stay as they are.
Can I keep playing while the drive is acting up?
Digital games are fine, since they don’t use the drive. Avoid putting discs in if the drive is grinding or scraping, because that can scratch them for good. If it only fails to read now and then, it’s safe to keep trying until the repair.
