iPhone ghost touch: why your screen taps by itself.

Apps opening and typing on their own? Find out whether it's a protector, charger, software or the display.

Quick answer

Take off the screen protector and case, unplug the charger, clean the screen and restart the iPhone. Then update iOS. If phantom taps continue with nothing attached, especially after a drop or an earlier screen repair, the display's touch layer is failing and the fix is a screen replacement.

What ghost touch looks like

Ghost touch is when your iPhone reacts to taps you didn't make. Apps open by themselves, the keyboard types random letters, pages scroll, or the phone dials someone while it's in your hand.

Sometimes it's constant. Sometimes it only happens in one corner, only while charging, or only when the phone is warm. Those patterns are useful clues, so note when it happens before you start.

If you can, record a short screen recording or video of it happening. It helps a technician see the problem straight away, especially if it comes and goes and won't show up during the diagnosis.

Start with the easy causes

  • Screen protector: a cracked, bubbled or lifting protector can register as touches. Peel it off and test the phone bare.
  • Case: a tight or warped case can press on the edges of the screen. Take it off.
  • Dirt and moisture: water droplets, sweat or sticky residue confuse the touch layer. Wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth.
  • Charger: low-quality chargers and cables can introduce electrical noise that makes touch erratic. If the problem only happens while charging, try a different cable and adapter.

Rule out software

A software glitch can make the screen misbehave without anything being broken. Work through these in order:

  1. Restart the iPhone.
  2. Force restart it: on iPhone 8 and later, press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. Update iOS in Settings → General → Software Update.
  4. Reset All Settings in Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset. This keeps your data but resets settings like Wi-Fi passwords and wallpaper.
  5. As a last resort, back up and restore the iPhone. Only do this if your backup is current.

If the ghost touches stop after a restart but come back days later, keep an eye on it. That pattern often turns out to be hardware that's starting to fail.

Signs it's the display

  • It started after a drop, even without a visible crack.
  • The glass is cracked anywhere, including at the edges.
  • It happens in every app, with no case, protector or charger attached.
  • One area of the screen doesn't respond, or responds constantly.
  • The screen was replaced recently. Low-quality replacement panels are a common cause of ghost touch.

Ghost touch isn't caused by a virus. iOS malware doesn't produce phantom taps, so if software fixes don't help, the touch layer is the likely culprit.

Ghost touch after a screen repair

If ghost touch started soon after a screen was replaced, the replacement panel is the most likely cause. Some low-cost panels have touch layers that are sensitive to heat, charging noise or slight pressure from the frame. A panel that wasn't seated properly, or a connector that wasn't fully pressed home, can cause the same thing.

If the repair was recent, contact the shop that did it first. Most repairs come with a warranty, and a faulty panel should be covered. If that isn't an option, a quality replacement panel usually solves it for good.

Fixing it

On modern iPhones the touch layer is part of the display assembly, so the fix is a screen replacement. Your data isn't touched. The diagnosis is free, so you'll know whether it's the display before you pay anything.

If your iPhone came with an OLED screen, an OLED replacement is the closest match to the original. See OLED vs LCD replacement screens for the difference.

After the new screen is fitted, we test the full touch grid edge to edge, along with Face ID, the proximity sensor and brightness, so you leave knowing the problem is gone.

Using your iPhone until it's fixed

Keep the phone locked when you're not using it so ghost touches can't open apps, send messages or make calls. Set Auto-Lock to a short time in Settings → Display & Brightness. Back up to iCloud in case the screen gets worse.

Frequently asked questions

Can a charger cause ghost touch on an iPhone?

Yes. Some low-quality chargers and cables create electrical noise that makes the touchscreen act up, but only while plugged in. Try a different cable and adapter.

Will a new screen fix ghost touch?

If the display's touch layer is the cause, yes. That's why we diagnose it first: if it's a protector, charger or software issue, you won't need a screen.

Is ghost touch caused by a virus?

No. Phantom taps come from hardware or a software glitch, not malware.
