OLED vs LCD replacement screens: which is right for you?

How OLED and LCD replacements compare, and which one your iPhone needs.

Quick answer

If your iPhone came with an OLED screen (every iPhone 12 and later, plus the X, XS and 11 Pro models), an OLED replacement looks and works closest to the original: true blacks, accurate color and better battery life. LCD replacements cost less but look duller, can sit slightly higher and may use more power. For iPhones that shipped with LCD, a quality LCD is the right choice.

Which iPhones use OLED?

OLED: iPhone X, XS and XS Max, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, and every iPhone 12 and later.

LCD: iPhone 11, XR, every iPhone SE, and iPhone 8 and earlier.

How they compare

  • Picture: OLED has true blacks and higher contrast. LCD looks greyer in the dark.
  • Battery: OLED uses less power, especially with dark content. An LCD backlight is always on.
  • Fit: aftermarket LCDs can sit slightly higher in the frame.
  • Smoothness: quality OLED panels can support 120Hz ProMotion on Pro models. Many budget LCDs are limited to 60Hz.
  • Price: LCD is the budget option.

Not all OLED replacements are equal

Replacement OLEDs range from original panels to flexible "soft" OLEDs that are close to original, and rigid "hard" OLEDs that cost less. A good shop tells you exactly which one you're getting.

True Tone, Face ID and parts messages

True Tone can be kept by transferring your original screen's data where the model allows it. Face ID keeps working as long as the earpiece and sensor assembly are moved over carefully. With a non-genuine display, iOS may show a parts message in Settings. The screen still works normally.

What we recommend

Choose OLED for an OLED-original iPhone you plan to keep. Choose LCD if budget matters most, or for an older phone you'll replace soon. Either way, you'll see both prices before any work begins. See screen repair options.

Frequently asked questions

Is an LCD replacement screen bad?

No. It's a budget option that works well. It just won't match an OLED's contrast, color or battery efficiency.

Will my iPhone say the display isn't genuine?

It may show a parts message in Settings with a non-genuine panel. It doesn't affect touch, brightness or Face ID.

Does screen type affect battery life?

Yes. OLED is more efficient, so an LCD replacement on an OLED-original iPhone can shorten battery life a little.
