Controller charging port repair.
A controller that only charges at an angle, or not at all, usually has a worn or damaged port. We replace USB-C and micro-USB ports on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo controllers and test charging and wired play.

Signs you need this repair
Sound familiar? The diagnosis is always free.
- It only charges when you hold the cable a certain way
- No charging light or lightbar when you plug it in
- The cable falls out or feels loose
- Charging starts and stops on its own
- It won’t work in wired mode even with a good cable
- The port looks bent, burnt or full of lint
Which port does your controller have?
- DualSense and DualSense Edge: USB-C.
- DualShock 4: micro-USB, plus contacts on the back edge used by some charging docks.
- Xbox Wireless Controller (Series X|S): USB-C. Xbox One controller: micro-USB. Both run on AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack, so the port only charges if you have a rechargeable pack installed.
- Xbox Elite Series 2: USB-C, with a built-in battery and a charging dock.
- Switch Pro Controller: USB-C.
- Joy-Con: no port. They charge through the rail connector on the side. If a Joy-Con won’t charge on the console, the rail cable in the Joy-Con, or the rail on the console, may be at fault. We can check both.
Port, cable or battery?
Before you book, rule out the easy things:
- Try another cable. Some cables only carry power, and many worn cables fail before ports do.
- Try another power source, such as a wall adapter or a different USB port on the console.
- Shine a light into the port. If you see lint, turn the controller off and lift it out with a dry wooden toothpick.
- On a PS5, check the rest mode power setting if the controller only charges while the console is on.
If it charges but runs out fast, the battery is more likely than the port. See controller battery replacement. We test the port, the charging circuit and the battery separately during the free diagnosis, so you only pay for what’s actually broken.
How we repair a controller charging port
On some controllers the port sits on a small separate board joined by a ribbon cable, which makes the repair simpler. On others it’s soldered straight to the main board. Either way, we remove the damaged port, clean and inspect the pads, and fit a quality replacement port.
Sometimes the port isn’t the only damage. A bent tab inside the port can short the power pins, which leaves burn marks and can harm the charging chip. Liquid that got into the port can corrode it from the inside. We check for both before we quote, so the new port isn’t fitted to a board with a hidden fault.
If the pads under the port were torn when it broke, we repair them first so the new port holds firmly. Then we test charging from a wall adapter and a console, check wired play, and confirm the charging light or lightbar behaves normally. For controllers with charging docks, we check the dock contacts too.
How much does controller charging port repair cost?
Controller charging port repair starts from $35. The price can go up if the port is mounted on the main board rather than a small separate board, if the pads are damaged, or if the battery or charging chip also needs replacing. You get the exact price before any work, and with no fix, no fee there’s no charge if we can’t repair it.
Keeping your new port healthy
- Don’t play with the cable pulled tight. A longer cable or a charging dock takes the strain off the port.
- Pull the cable out by the plug, never by the cord, and keep it straight as you do.
- Cheap magnetic cable tips are convenient, but poorly made ones can short or get hot. Choose a reputable brand if you use them.
- Keep the controller out of pockets and bags where lint can pack into the port.
Before you send it
Send just the controller, turned off. For Xbox controllers, include the rechargeable battery pack if you use one, since it’s part of the charging path. Leave AA batteries out. If you use a charging dock and the problem only happens on the dock, include the dock and mention it on the booking form. A short note about when charging stopped working, and anything that happened just before, helps us find the cause faster.

Questions
Why does my DualSense only charge when the PS5 is on?
That’s usually a setting. In the PS5 power settings you can choose to supply power to USB ports in rest mode. If it’s on and the controller still won’t charge in rest mode, the port or cable may be at fault.
Can a charging dock damage the port?
A well-made dock is gentle on the port, and docks that use separate contacts skip the port entirely. Docks that plug into the port and wobble can wear it over time.
Is my Joy-Con charging problem the controller or the Switch?
Try the Joy-Con on the other side or on another Switch if you can. If one Joy-Con fails on both sides, it’s the Joy-Con. If any Joy-Con fails on one side, it’s the console’s rail.
Will a fast phone charger damage my controller?
Generally not. A USB-C charger only delivers the power the controller asks for. The risk comes from cheap, unbranded chargers and cables that don’t follow the standard, so stick with reputable ones.
Is it worth fixing an older DualShock 4 port?
Often, yes. The repair usually costs less than a new controller, and the rest of the controller may have plenty of life left.
