Signs you need this repair
Sound familiar? The diagnosis is always free.
- A button sticks down or comes back up slowly
- A button registers twice, or not at all
- You have to press hard for a button to work
- A trigger stops partway or doesn’t register its full travel
- A bumper (L1, R1, LB or RB) lost its click or stopped working
- DualSense trigger resistance is gone or grinds
- Joy-Con ZL, ZR, SL or SR buttons don’t respond
Why controller buttons stop working
Most face buttons and D-pads sit on rubber membranes. Under each button, a small conductive pad presses against contacts on the circuit board. With wear, the pad loses its conductive coating, the rubber tires, or dirt and dried drinks build up between pad and board.
Bumpers usually work differently. They use tiny clicky switches soldered to the board, and those switches have a limited number of presses before they go soft or stop. Triggers use a sensor to measure how far they’re pressed, plus a spring to push them back. On the DualSense, each trigger also has a small motor and gears for the resistance effects.
Sticky, mushy or dead: what each usually means
- Sticky: almost always residue from a spill, food or hand lotion. A thorough clean inside usually fixes it.
- Mushy or hard to press: a worn membrane or conductive pad. We replace the membrane or pad.
- Double-pressing or inconsistent: a failing switch, dirty contacts or a worn pad.
- Completely dead: a failed switch, a torn ribbon cable, a broken contact on the board or liquid damage.
- Trigger stops short: a broken spring, a worn sensor or, on DualSense, a stuck trigger-effect mechanism.
If several buttons stopped at the same time, the cause is usually something they share, such as a ribbon cable or a patch of corrosion, rather than each button. That’s also why we open and inspect the whole controller instead of guessing from the outside.
How we repair buttons and triggers
- Open the controller and inspect every button, contact and cable.
- Clean the board contacts and membranes with the right solvent, never water.
- Replace worn membranes, conductive pads, switches, springs or ribbon cables as needed.
- Check the trigger mechanisms and, on DualSense, the trigger motors and gears.
- Reassemble and test every input, including analog trigger range, on a test screen and in a game.
We replace worn parts with quality equivalents that match the original feel as closely as possible. Bumper switches, for example, come in different click strengths, and we choose ones close to the original so the controller doesn’t feel unfamiliar in your hands.
D-pads deserve a special mention. A D-pad that rolls into diagonals or misses inputs is usually a worn membrane or dirty contacts under the pad, and fighting-game and platformer players notice it first. It’s a straightforward fix once the controller is open.
Model notes
- DualSense and DualSense Edge. L1 and R1 failures and trigger-effect faults are common. Edge back buttons and trigger stops can be checked too.
- DualShock 4. Worn membranes and L2 or R2 springs are the usual fixes.
- Xbox Wireless Controller. LB and RB switches wear out, and D-pads can feel mushy. We replace the switch or the worn parts.
- Xbox Elite Series 2. Bumpers that stop working are a well-known problem. Paddles and trigger locks can wear as well.
- Joy-Con and Switch Pro. ZL and ZR switches, SL and SR buttons on the rail side and ribbon cables are the common failures.
How much does controller button repair cost?
Button and trigger repair starts from $35. The price depends on how many inputs need work, which parts need replacing, and whether there’s liquid damage underneath. If we find a drifting stick or a worn battery while it’s open, we’ll tell you and you can decide whether to add it. You approve the price before any work. For drifting sticks, see stick drift repair.
Safe cleaning at home
For a button that’s only slightly sticky, turn the controller off and wipe around the edge of the button with a cloth barely dampened with isopropyl alcohol, pressing the button a few times. Let it dry fully before turning it on.
Don’t soak the controller, run it under water or use oils and household sprays. If a drink went inside, stop using it, remove the batteries if they’re removable and book a free check. Sugar and corrosion spread over time.

Questions
Is it worth repairing an Xbox Elite or DualSense Edge?
Usually, yes. These controllers cost a lot to replace, and bumper, button and trigger faults are very repairable.
Will the buttons feel like new?
Replacing worn membranes and switches brings back a firm, even feel. We test the click and travel of each repaired input.
My DualSense trigger resistance stopped working. Is that a setting?
Check first. Trigger effects can be turned down or off in the PS5 settings, and some games don’t use them. If they’re on and supported but nothing happens, or the trigger grinds, it’s a hardware fault we can check.
Can you fix several buttons in one repair?
Yes. If more than one input needs work, we do them in the same visit and include them in one quote. That usually costs less than separate repairs, since the controller only comes apart once.
Can you fix buttons on a controller that got wet?
Often. The sooner it’s cleaned, the better the odds. Don’t charge it or use it until it’s been checked.
