Signs you need this repair
Sound familiar? The diagnosis is always free.
- It lasts far fewer hours than it used to
- It shuts off suddenly, even when it shows charge left
- It only works while plugged in
- It won’t turn on after being stored for a while
- The shell is bulging or the back panel has separated
- It gets warm while charging
Why controller batteries wear out
Rechargeable controllers use lithium-ion batteries, and every charge cycle wears them a little. After a few years of daily play, a battery can hold much less than it did new. Heat speeds that up, and so does leaving a controller fully drained for months.
Feature-heavy controllers wear batteries faster simply because they use more power. The DualSense’s haptics, trigger effects and lightbar all draw from the same small battery, so its battery life was never long to begin with.
Is it the battery, or your settings?
Before replacing anything, check that the settings aren’t eating your charge:
- DualSense: lower the vibration and trigger effect intensity, dim the controller lights, and set the controller to turn off after a period of inactivity.
- Switch: keep the console updated and disconnect Joy-Con you’re not using.
- Xbox Elite Series 2: check for controller updates in the Xbox Accessories app.
If you’ve done that and it still dies quickly, or it’s much worse than it was, the battery is worn. A simple test helps: charge it fully, play as normal and note how long it lasts. If that’s well under half of what you remember, a new battery will make a clear difference.
Also rule out the cable and the port. A controller that never reaches a full charge because of a worn port will look like it has a bad battery. If the cable needs wiggling to charge, read controller charging port repair first.
Swollen controller battery: what to do
A swollen battery pushes the shell apart, lifts a panel or makes the triggers or buttons feel different. Stop using and charging the controller right away. Keep it somewhere cool, away from anything flammable, and don’t press on it or try to open it.
Damaged lithium batteries have shipping restrictions. If you see swelling, say so when you book so we can advise you, or choose a nearby partner store through repair near me.
Battery replacement by controller
- DualSense and DualSense Edge. The battery sits inside the shell on a small connector. We open the controller without stressing its ribbon cables and fit a new battery.
- DualShock 4. A common, straightforward replacement that gives an older controller a lot more life.
- Joy-Con. The battery is behind the back shell. We replace it and check the rail connector that charges it.
- Switch Pro Controller. Internal battery with a connector. We replace it and test charging over USB-C and while docked.
- Xbox Elite Series 2. The battery is built in, not user-replaceable. We replace it and test charging by cable and dock.
- Standard Xbox Wireless Controllers. These use AA batteries or a removable rechargeable pack, so there’s no internal battery to replace. If a pack won’t charge in the controller, we can check the controller’s charging contacts.
How much does controller battery replacement cost?
Controller battery replacement starts from $35. The price depends on your controller and how far it has to come apart. Elite and Edge controllers take longer than a DualShock 4 or Joy-Con.
We use quality replacement cells with built-in protection, sized to fit the original space. Be careful with listings that promise a much bigger battery for the same size. Those numbers are often inflated, and an oversized battery can press on parts inside the shell. You get the exact price before any work.
Before you send it
Send the controller only, with cables and docks left at home unless the fault happens only on a dock. There’s no need to charge it fully first; somewhere around half is ideal for shipping. If the battery won’t charge at all, send it as it is. Tell us roughly how long it lasts now and how old it is; that helps us confirm the battery is the cause.
If the controller also has drift or a worn button, mention it when you book. Doing it in the same visit saves opening the controller twice. See stick drift repair and button repair.

Questions
How long will a new controller battery last?
A new battery should give you close to the hours the controller had when new. How many years it lasts depends on how much you play and how warm it’s kept.
My controller still dies with a new battery. Why?
The charging circuit, the port or a power-hungry fault on the board can drain or fail to charge a good battery. We test the charging path as part of every battery replacement.
Can I replace the battery myself?
On some controllers you can, but thin ribbon cables and tight shells make it easy to cause new damage. A swollen battery should never be opened at home.
Should I leave my controller plugged in all the time?
It won’t harm it in a well-designed controller, since charging stops when the battery is full. Keeping it somewhere cool matters more. If you store a controller for months, leave it about half charged rather than empty.
Is it worth replacing the battery in an older controller?
Usually, if the rest of the controller works well. A battery costs much less than a new controller and can give it years more use.
