Laptop battery replacement for batteries that die fast or swell.

If your laptop only lasts an hour off the charger, or the trackpad is starting to lift, the battery is worn out. We fit a quality replacement and test it charging and discharging before it goes back.

Signs you need this repair

Sound familiar? The diagnosis is always free.

  • Battery lasts a fraction of what it used to
  • Laptop shuts off at 20 or 30 percent
  • Only runs when plugged in
  • Trackpad clicks stiffly or is lifting
  • Bottom case bulging, or the keyboard pushed up
  • Battery percentage jumps or drops suddenly
  • A battery warning in Windows or your laptop maker's app

Swollen laptop battery: what to do now

A swollen battery is the one laptop fault that shouldn't wait. Lithium-ion cells swell as they age or after damage, and the pressure can crack the case, lift the trackpad, push up the keyboard and, in rare cases, start a fire. A swollen battery doesn't go back to normal once you stop charging it.

  • Stop charging it and shut it down.
  • Don't press on the bulge, puncture it or try to flatten the case.
  • Keep it on a hard, non-flammable surface away from bedding, paper and fabric.
  • If it's hot, smoking or hissing, keep your distance and contact your local fire service.

Shipping rules restrict sending damaged or swollen lithium batteries, so for a swollen battery a nearby partner store is the safer route. If there isn't one near you, contact us and we'll go through the options.

Check your battery health first

Windows can tell you how worn your battery is. Open Command Prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. It saves a report that lists the design capacity and the full charge capacity. If the full charge capacity has dropped far below the design figure, the battery is worn out. Many laptop makers' own apps show battery health too, and on a Chromebook the built-in Diagnostics app shows battery health and cycle count.

It's also worth ruling out software. A background app draining power, a very bright screen or a power mode set to Best performance can make a healthy battery seem weak. Settings > System > Power & battery in Windows 11 shows which apps use the most.

What a laptop battery replacement costs

Laptop battery replacement starts from $99. What moves the price:

  • The battery itself. Larger batteries, like those in gaming and workstation laptops, cost more than the smaller cells in a Chromebook.
  • How it's fitted. Most are screwed in under the bottom cover. Some thin laptops and Surface devices have glued batteries, which take longer to remove safely.
  • Part availability. Batteries for older or less common models can take longer to source, and we tell you the wait before you decide.

We use quality replacement batteries that match the original voltage and capacity, not no-name cells that overstate their rating. See pricing for how quotes work.

How the battery is replaced

On most current laptops the battery is internal. We open the bottom cover and disconnect the battery before anything else, so nothing is live while we work. Some models need the keyboard deck or other parts removed first. Glued batteries are freed slowly with heat and adhesive remover, never pried in a way that could puncture a cell.

After fitting, we check that the laptop reports the right capacity, that it charges and stops charging properly, and that it runs normally on battery. If the old battery was swollen, we inspect the case, trackpad and keyboard for damage it caused and tell you if anything else needs attention. Windows may take a few full charge cycles before its time-remaining estimate settles down.

Make the new battery last longer

  • Turn on a charge limit if your laptop has one. Many brands offer a setting in their app or BIOS that stops charging at around 80 percent, which helps if it stays plugged in all day.
  • Keep the vents clear and avoid soft surfaces. Heat ages a battery faster than anything else.
  • Don't store it fully drained for weeks. If it's going in a drawer, leave it around half charged.
  • Use the charger made for it, or a reputable USB-C charger with enough wattage.

Before any repair, back up your files. A battery swap doesn't touch your drive, but a backup is always good practice.

Questions

How long should a laptop battery last?

Most laptop batteries are rated for several hundred full charge cycles, and many people notice a clear drop after two to four years. Heat, sitting at 100 percent all day and heavy gaming wear them out faster.

Can I keep using my laptop plugged in with a dead battery?

Some laptops run fine on the charger, while others slow down or won't start at all without a working battery. A failing battery can also cause sudden shutdowns that lose your work. And a swollen battery should come out, not stay in.

Should I send my charger with the laptop?

Yes, for a battery repair. It lets us confirm your adapter supplies the right power, since a weak charger can look like a battery fault.

Do you replace batteries in Surface devices and Chromebooks?

Yes. Surface batteries are glued in and the devices take longer to open, so they cost more than a typical laptop. Many Chromebook batteries are screwed in and simpler. We confirm the price for your model before starting.

Can I replace my laptop battery myself?

On older laptops with a removable battery, yes. Internal batteries are possible too, but the battery has to be disconnected before anything else is touched, and a glued battery can be punctured if it's pried. A damaged cell can catch fire, so if you're not confident, let a repair shop do it.
