Game Boy backlit IPS screen mod for GB, GBC, GBA and GBA SP.
Original Game Boy screens need a bright lamp and the right angle. A backlit IPS mod replaces the old panel with a bright, sharp display, so you can play anywhere, including in the dark.

Signs you need this repair
Sound familiar? The diagnosis is always free.
- You can only see the screen in strong light
- Vertical lines or missing columns on an original Game Boy
- A dim, washed-out GBA SP frontlight
- Dark spots, bubbles or a worn polarizer on the screen
- A scratched or cracked screen lens
- Colors that are hard to make out on a GBC or GBA
What an IPS backlit mod changes
The original Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance have reflective screens with no light of their own. The first GBA SP (AGS-001) added a frontlight, and the later AGS-101 SP has a true backlight. An IPS mod replaces the original screen with a modern backlit IPS panel built for that console.
What you gain:
- A bright, even backlight you can adjust
- Sharper pixels and stronger colors
- Wide viewing angles, so you don’t have to tilt to see the picture
- On many kits, extra options such as color palettes for original Game Boy games and a pixel-grid look
What to know: the mod replaces only the display, so your cartridges, saves and accessories work exactly as before. A backlight uses more power, so battery life is usually shorter than with the original screen. The look is also different from the original. Some people prefer the classic screen, and that’s a fair choice.
Options by Game Boy model
- Original Game Boy (DMG). IPS kits transform it. Many fit with some shell trimming or a new shell. If you’d rather keep the original screen, we can often fix vertical lines instead.
- Game Boy Pocket. Kits are available, and the result is a much brighter, smaller screen.
- Game Boy Color. Popular and well supported. Some kits drop in; others need a new shell for a clean fit.
- Game Boy Advance. The most-requested mod. Kits range from ones that need shell trimming to ones made for a new shell, with laminated versions available.
- GBA SP. IPS kits are brighter and sharper than both original SP screens. The ribbon cable runs through the hinge and is fragile, so this one needs extra care.
Drop-in, shell-trim and laminated kits
Drop-in kits fit the original shell without cutting. Shell-trim kits need small cuts inside the shell, which can’t be undone. Some larger screens are designed to go with a new shell that’s already shaped for them.
Laminated kits bond the glass lens to the display. That removes the air gap, so there’s less glare and no dust can get between the lens and the screen. They usually cost a bit more.
Fitting is careful work either way. We open the console, remove the old screen and lens, fit the new panel and wire it to power where the kit requires it. Some kits add a touch pad or a button combination for brightness, which we set up and show you how to use. Then we test the screen, buttons and sound with a game before it goes back.
Tell us what matters to you. If you want to keep your original shell untouched, we’ll choose a kit that fits it, or fit a new shell. If you want your original screen and shell back, say so when you book.
Original screen problems we can fix without a mod
Not everyone wants an IPS screen. On an original Game Boy, vertical lines or missing columns are usually a failing connection along the edge of the screen’s ribbon, not a dead screen, and they can often be repaired. A scratched or cracked lens can be replaced on its own. If you prefer the classic look, we’ll quote those repairs instead.
How much does a Game Boy backlit screen mod cost?
Backlit screen mods start from $79. The price depends on your model, the kit type (drop-in, laminated or one that needs a new shell), whether you want a new shell, and other repairs you’d like at the same time, such as new buttons or a power repair. We confirm the price before any work, and we’ll tell you up front if a kit needs your shell trimmed.
Before you send it
Take out the batteries and any cartridge. If some buttons are sticky or dead, or the sound is crackly, mention it when you book. It’s easier to sort out while the console is already open. For the GBA SP, there’s no need to send the charger unless the console doesn’t charge.

Questions
Does a screen mod affect how games play?
No. Games run exactly the same. Only the display changes, and on some kits you get extra options such as palettes and brightness levels.
Can the mod be undone?
With a drop-in kit, yes, as long as you keep the original screen. Shell-trim kits mean small permanent cuts inside the shell, though a new shell can replace it.
Is an IPS screen better than the GBA SP AGS-101 backlight?
It’s brighter, sharper and has better viewing angles. The AGS-101 is a good screen, so the difference is smaller than on the other models, but it’s still noticeable.
How much shorter is battery life with an IPS screen?
It depends on the kit and the brightness level. At high brightness you’ll notice it; turned down, many kits come close to normal play time. Rechargeable batteries or a rechargeable battery kit can help, where one exists for your model.
Does an IPS mod lower a collectible’s value?
For collectors who want everything original, it can. For players, it usually makes the console far more enjoyable. If value matters to you, choose a drop-in kit and keep the original parts.
