MacBook battery replacement, for short life and swollen cells.

A battery health warning, a Mac that dies off the charger, or a trackpad that’s getting hard to click. A new battery fixes the runtime, and a swollen one shouldn’t wait.

Signs you need this repair

Sound familiar? The diagnosis is always free.

  • “Service Recommended” in Battery Health
  • Battery life down to an hour or two
  • Shuts down with charge still showing
  • Trackpad stiff or hard to click
  • Bottom case bulging or the Mac rocking on a desk
  • Only works while plugged in
  • Percentage jumps or drops suddenly

Is it really the battery? How to check

Open System Settings, click Battery, then click the info button next to Battery Health. You’ll see Normal or Service Recommended, and on many models the maximum capacity as a percentage.

To see the cycle count, hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then select Power under Hardware. Apple rates most modern MacBook batteries for 1,000 cycles, though heat and age matter too. A Service Recommended warning, or a capacity well under 80 percent, is a clear sign it’s time.

A healthy battery can still drain fast if an app is working hard in the background. Open Activity Monitor and check the Energy tab for anything using a lot of power, and quit it to see if battery life improves. Also note that macOS’s Optimized Battery Charging may hold your charge at 80 percent for a while to reduce wear. That’s normal and not a fault.

If the Mac won’t charge at all, even with a known-good charger, the issue may be the port or the charging circuit rather than the battery. See MacBook won’t charge repair. The free diagnosis tests all of it.

Swollen MacBook battery? Stop using it

MacBook batteries sit directly under the trackpad and keyboard. When a cell swells, it pushes up on the trackpad, which becomes stiff or stops clicking, and it can bow the bottom case so the Mac rocks on a desk. In bad cases the keyboard lifts.

  • Shut it down and unplug it.
  • Don’t press on the swelling or try to remove the battery yourself.
  • Keep it somewhere cool, on a hard surface, away from anything flammable.
  • Book soon and mention the swelling, so we can advise on the safest way to get it to us.

Acting early can save the trackpad and case from damage.

How MacBook battery replacement works

MacBook batteries are glued in, and the method depends on the model.

  • Many Retina and Intel-era models (roughly 2012–2020): the cells are glued to the inside of the top case. The manufacturer’s standard service replaces the whole top case, keyboard included. We release the old cells with adhesive remover and patience, without prying metal tools that could puncture a cell, then fit a new battery into your existing top case.
  • Several newer models, including the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro: the battery uses stretch-release adhesive tabs, which makes the removal cleaner.

Before any of that, the battery is disconnected from the logic board. Afterward we check charging, discharge under load, the cycle count reading and the trackpad, and confirm macOS reports the new battery as healthy.

What affects the price of a MacBook battery replacement

Battery replacements start from $149. Your model sets most of the price: larger batteries and glued-in designs take more parts and labor. If swelling has damaged the trackpad, bottom case or keyboard, those may need replacing too. On top-case models, a keyboard that’s already failing can sometimes be handled in the same repair, which saves a second opening. We confirm the price with you before work starts.

Making a new MacBook battery last

Heat is what ages a MacBook battery fastest. Keep any vents clear and avoid using the Mac on a bed, pillow or blanket. Don’t leave it in a hot car or in direct sun. Heavy work, like gaming or video exports while charging, makes the most heat, so give it a hard surface for those.

If you’re storing a MacBook for a long time, Apple recommends leaving the battery at about half charge rather than full or empty. Leave Optimized Battery Charging switched on for everyday use; it reduces the time the battery spends at 100 percent.

Before you send it

Back up with Time Machine or make sure iCloud Drive is synced. Remove any snap-on case or skin. Tell us if the battery is swollen when you book. You don’t need to sign out of your Apple Account. We may ask for a login only to test the battery under macOS; a separate test user account works too.

Questions

Is it worth replacing the battery in an older MacBook?

Usually, if the rest of the Mac does what you need. A battery costs far less than a new Mac and often brings back hours of runtime. If your Mac no longer gets macOS updates, weigh that too.

Will a battery replacement erase my Mac?

No. The battery is separate from the storage. Your files, apps and settings stay as they are.

Can a swollen battery damage other parts?

Yes. It can crack or stiffen the trackpad, bend the bottom case and lift the keyboard. That’s why it’s better to replace it early.

Does the new battery need calibrating?

No special steps are needed. macOS learns the new battery on its own over the first few charge cycles, and the percentage settles during that time. Just use and charge the Mac normally.

Is it bad to keep my MacBook plugged in all the time?

Modern macOS manages charging to reduce wear, so keeping it plugged in is generally fine. Heat is the bigger enemy: avoid using it on soft surfaces that block the vents.
