Does your MacBook need a new battery?

How to check your MacBook's battery, when to replace it, and what affects the cost.

Quick answer

Check System Settings → Battery for a "Service Recommended" message, and look up the cycle count in System Information → Power. If the battery is flagged, the Mac shuts down unexpectedly, or battery life has dropped sharply, it's time for a replacement. Our MacBook battery replacements start at $149.

Signs your battery is worn

  • Battery life is much shorter than it used to be.
  • The Mac shuts down suddenly, even with charge showing.
  • macOS shows "Service Recommended" for the battery.
  • The case or trackpad is bulging, or the trackpad has become hard to click. That can mean a swollen battery.

How to check battery health

Open System Settings → Battery and look at the battery health or condition information. If it says Service Recommended, the battery has worn significantly.

For the cycle count, hold the Option key, click the Apple menu and choose System Information, then select Power. Apple publishes a rated cycle count for each Mac model on its support site, so you can compare yours against it.

A swollen battery is urgent

If the bottom case is bulging or the trackpad is being pushed up, stop using the Mac on your lap, stop charging it, and get the battery replaced soon. A swollen battery can damage the trackpad, keyboard and case.

What affects the cost

  • Your model. Batteries vary in size and design.
  • How it's fitted. On many MacBooks the battery cells are glued in place. Removing them safely takes time and care, which adds to labor.
  • Collateral damage. A swollen battery may have damaged the trackpad or case, which would need fixing too.

You'll always get the exact price for your model before any work starts.

Make the new battery last

  • Keep the Mac out of heat, and avoid using it on soft surfaces that block airflow.
  • Leave macOS's battery charging optimization turned on.
  • Keep macOS up to date.

Battery or something else?

Not every battery problem is the battery. A few things look the same:

  • A faulty charger or cable. Try a different adapter and cable, ideally ones you know work.
  • A worn or damaged charging port. If the Mac only charges at certain angles, or not at all, the port or charging circuit may be at fault.
  • Liquid damage. Even an old spill can cause charging problems or sudden shutdowns as corrosion spreads.
  • Software. An app running in the background can drain the battery quickly. The Energy tab in Activity Monitor shows what's using power.

That's why we diagnose before quoting. If the battery isn't the cause, we'll tell you, and you won't pay for one you didn't need.

Frequently asked questions

How many cycles should a MacBook battery last?

Apple publishes a rated cycle count for each model. You can compare your count, from System Information → Power, against the number for your Mac.

Can I keep using my MacBook with Service Recommended?

Yes, but expect shorter battery life and possible sudden shutdowns. If the battery is swelling, stop using it and get it replaced.

Will I lose my files?

No. A battery replacement doesn't touch your storage, but backing up first is always a good idea.
