iPhone stuck on the Apple logo? Here's the fix.

How to fix a boot loop without losing data, and what restarting every 3 minutes means.

Quick answer

Force restart it first. If it still loops, connect it to a computer, enter recovery mode and choose Update, which reinstalls iOS without erasing your data. If Update fails, or it restarts every few minutes even after starting up, it's usually hardware: a failing battery, a damaged flex cable or a logic board fault.

Why it happens

  • An iOS update that failed partway through.
  • Storage that's completely full.
  • A worn battery that can't supply enough power during startup.
  • A damaged part, such as a sensor or charge port flex, that iOS can't talk to.
  • A logic board fault, often after a drop or liquid exposure.

Fix 1: Force restart

  1. iPhone 8 or later (including SE 2nd/3rd gen): press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: press and hold volume down and the side button together until the Apple logo appears.
  3. iPhone 6s, SE (1st gen) and earlier: press and hold the Home button and the side or top button together until the Apple logo appears.

Fix 2: Update in recovery mode

  1. Connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC.
  2. Open Finder on a Mac, or the Apple Devices app or iTunes on a PC.
  3. Do the force restart sequence, but keep holding the side button until the recovery mode screen appears.
  4. Choose Update. If the download takes longer than about 15 minutes, the iPhone leaves recovery mode. Just repeat the steps.

Fix 3: Restore, only as a last resort

Restore erases the iPhone completely. Only do it if your data is backed up, or you don't need it.

If it restarts every three minutes

A phone that starts up, works briefly, then restarts every few minutes is a classic sign of hardware. iOS reboots on purpose when a part it expects doesn't respond, often a damaged charge port flex, the battery, or a part from an earlier repair.

If the phone stays on long enough, the restart logs under Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Analytics Data (look for entries starting with "panic") show technicians which part is to blame.

Saving your data

Update doesn't erase anything. If Update fails and you need your photos, don't Restore. A board-level repair can often get the phone starting again with your data intact.

Frequently asked questions

Will recovery mode erase my iPhone?

Only if you choose Restore. Update reinstalls iOS and keeps your apps, photos and settings.

Why does my iPhone keep restarting?

Software issues and full storage can cause it, but regular restarts every few minutes usually point to hardware like the battery, a flex cable or the logic board.

Can you fix a boot loop without losing data?

Very often, yes. Most boot loops are fixed by an Update or by repairing the faulty part, both of which keep your data.
