Try a different cable and adapter, then gently clean the port with a wooden or plastic toothpick and restart the iPhone. If it charges wirelessly but not with a cable, the port is the problem. If it won't charge any way at all, it's probably the battery or the charging circuit on the board.
Step 1: Swap the cable and adapter
Cables wear out inside long before they look damaged. Try a cable and adapter you know work, ideally Apple or certified, and a different outlet.
Step 2: Clean the port
Pocket lint packs into the bottom of the port so the cable can't seat fully. That's the classic cause of "only charges at an angle". Power the phone off, shine a light in, and gently scrape it out with a wooden or plastic toothpick. Never use anything metal.
Step 3: Rule out software
- Optimized Battery Charging can pause charging at 80% overnight. That's normal.
- The 80% limit on iPhone 15 and later stops charging at 80% by design.
- Charging on hold appears when the phone is too hot. Let it cool.
- Restart the phone and update iOS.
Step 4: Try wireless charging
If MagSafe or a Qi charger works but a cable doesn't, the port is the problem. If neither works, look at the battery or the charging circuit.
Step 5: Read the message
"Accessory may not be supported" usually means a bad cable or a dirty or damaged port. "Liquid detected" means the port needs to dry before you charge.
When it needs a repair
A worn port is replaced as part of the charge port assembly, which also carries the microphones on many models. If a new port doesn't fix it, the charging chip on the logic board may have failed. That's a board-level repair.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPhone only charge at an angle?
Lint packed into the port, or a worn port. A careful cleaning fixes it more often than you'd think.
Why does my iPhone stop charging at 80%?
Optimized Battery Charging or the 80% charging limit. Both protect the battery and can be changed in Settings → Battery.
How much does a charging port repair cost?
From $59.99, and the diagnosis is free. If cleaning fixes it, that's usually all you need.
