iPhone microphone not working? Test each mic first.

People can't hear you? Test each of your iPhone's microphones, then fix the one that's failed.

Quick answer

Your iPhone has several microphones. Test them one at a time: record a voice memo (bottom mic), record a video with the front camera (front mic) and with the rear camera (rear mic). Take off the case, gently clean the mic openings and check app permissions. If one mic is silent in every test, it's a hardware fault. On many models the bottom microphone is part of the charging port assembly.

Your iPhone has more than one microphone

There's a main microphone at the bottom, one near the earpiece at the top, and one on the back near the cameras. Different apps and features use different mics, which is why a call can sound fine on speaker but muffled when the phone is at your ear.

The extra microphones also help cancel background noise. If one of them fails, callers may say you sound distant, echoey or like you're in a tunnel, even though the main mic still works.

Test each microphone

  1. Open Voice Memos, record yourself speaking, and play it back. This tests the bottom microphone.
  2. Record a short video with the front camera and play it back. This tests the front microphone.
  3. Record a short video with the rear camera and play it back. This tests the rear microphone.

If one recording is silent or very faint while the others sound normal, you've found the problem mic.

Quick fixes

  • Take off the case and screen protector. Some cover the mic openings.
  • Gently brush the openings with a soft, dry brush.
  • Turn off Bluetooth. Your voice may be going to a headset or your car.
  • Check Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and make sure the app you're using is allowed.
  • Restart the iPhone and update iOS.

Problems only on calls?

If voice memos and videos sound fine but people can't hear you on calls, try speakerphone, test a FaceTime call, and try calling from another location. Poor signal can make you sound broken up even when the microphone is fine.

If the problem is only in one app, like WhatsApp or Zoom, check that app's microphone permission and settings, update it, and try reinstalling it. A problem in a single app is almost never hardware.

Tips while you wait for a repair

  • Use wired or Bluetooth headphones with a built-in mic. They bypass the iPhone's microphones entirely.
  • If only the bottom mic has failed, speakerphone and FaceTime may still work, since they can use other mics.
  • Send voice messages from an app that lets you choose speakerphone, or type instead.

Signs it's hardware

  • One microphone is silent in every test.
  • It stopped working after the phone got wet.
  • It happened around the same time charging became unreliable.
  • It started after a drop.

On many models the bottom microphone sits on the same flex cable as the charging port. If both are acting up, they usually share the same cause.

A mic that sounds faint and muffled rather than completely silent is often blocked rather than broken. Packed lint or dried liquid residue over the opening can be cleaned during a repair visit.

How it's fixed

If the bottom mic is on the charging port assembly, a charging port repair replaces both together. Other mics are replaced with their own parts. If the phone got wet, a water damage repair cleans the corrosion first. Faults in the audio circuit itself need a board-level repair.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't people hear me unless I use speakerphone?

Calls held to your ear and speakerphone use different microphones. If speaker works and normal calls don't, the main microphone or its noise-cancelling partner is likely at fault.

Does a charging port replacement fix the microphone?

Often, yes, on models where the bottom microphone is built into the charging port assembly.

Can water damage an iPhone microphone?

Yes. Liquid can block the mic or corrode its connections. Cleaning sometimes fixes it; otherwise the part is replaced.
